Burls Exotic Wood

by admin on December 14, 2009

It's for this reason that most burl hardwoods are used as veneers. This process only uses a tiny portion of the wood in the shape of little tiles fixed to another surface.

Like many hardwoods that have complicated grain patterns, it's best to offset such beauty with a more neutral hued wood , for example bamboo or cedar. Unfortunately, working with wood which has burls in it is really hard indeed, as the grain has been warped to such an extent that it makes it harder to chop. This is actually a wood for experienced craftspeople.

the form of the grain sometimes doesn't effect the wood's other benefits , for example a resistance to water stains or heat. Agree with it or not, there are also makers who employ the burl itself. Redwood tree burls are a superb example of this. A few of these grow sufficiently large that woodworkers may be able to cut slabs of it to be used as countertops, tabletops, chairs, and even bed frames! What makes this really unique is that the slab maintains the first jagged shape of the burl, making a splendidly organic look.
